NItjan Takivalit’s work That’s Mine expresses the emotional ties and helplessness between the Taiwanese Aborigines and the land. The artwork combines curves and rigid, straight lines. The tower-like iron construction portrays a male with his head bowed and holding a hunting rifle as though he’s been waiting here for a long time. The Taiwanese Aborigines did not use written contracts to stipulate boundaries between different tribes. Everyone in tribe is clearly aware of the fields, hunting grounds, and homes they own, and would not trespass other’s lands without permission. However, as other powers arrived in Taiwan, the Aborigines began losing their homes and hunting grounds. Nitjan Takivalit created this iron sculpture that incorporates traditional and modern features to tell this story and initiate dialogs with the land he lives on.
