LIAO Chun-Li uses reading as a perspective to observe the various facets of urban development. City Reading Series – Is This The Wall or Book? shows a heavy-looking tome with book covers that resemble urban wall surfaces illustrated at 2 different times. The red brick walls are covered by galvanized metal, with gaps exposing old, worn bricks, moss, and spray-painted numbers for temporary artwork. The two materials expose the trails of cultural and economic changes as well as the joys and sorrows of two different eras. LIAO Chun-Li observes and reads these different facets, guiding us to a meditative pose to better experience our surroundings by using an artwork that conveys urban memories of different backgrounds and times.
