YAO Jui-Chung’s works include a wide range of subjects but most of them explore the strange human world. Fairyland: Meditation explores the orthodoxy of landscape painting. The work does not incude features of traditional Chinese landscape paintings such as enlightening texts or pretense of elegance. Instead, the work is a transformation of epic landscapes into an autobiographical projection. Ballpoint pen is used in place of ink, and ordinary paper is used instead of Xuan paper. The entire body was engaged in the laborious task of overlapping and molding fine lines and strokes to form a landscape that was then transfer printed to a linen canvas to generate the final artwork appearing to be an authentic tranditional landscape painting. YAO Jui-Chung transformed the traditional medium and vocabulary of landscape painting to re-imagine the classical aesthetics they convey, using the creative process as an important means of self-refinement.
