HSIAO Chu-Sheng’s ink paintings often feature elements of Taiwanese folk culture and customs such as Bajiajiang troupes, Taichi, orchids, and bonsai, using classical artistic methods to portray modern novelties. Fragrance Everywhere-C is based upon wild orchids endemic to Taiwan such as the Black Lipped Bulbophyllum, Taiwanese Thrixspermum, Striped Acanthephippium, Saruwatar's Thrixspermum, and Day's Cymbidium. These native orchids are extremely sensitive to the destruction or disruption of their habitats. Lacking proper conditions and environments and struggling even to survive, these orchids could hardly bloosom in the wild. The open yet isolated nature of Taiwan’s native flora symbolize the xenophobic yet open-minded philosophy of the local people. HSIAO Chu-Sheng uses the properties of Taiwan’s indigenous orchids as a metaphor for Taiwan’s complicated domestic environment.
