CHANG Chung-Fan’s Chanyu’s Land is a work from the Kite Series. Artificial colors were added into these semi-figurative landscape paintings to convey a sense of oppression and to build connections with modern social environments. Patches with distinctive tones of blue create a mountainous landscape, while a large patch of fluorescent orange occupies the remaining composition with other landscape painting elements and geometric elements as a symbol of an intrusive force. The artist uses fluorescent colors to represent the conflict between enchantment and insecurity, between natural and artificial colors, and between semi-figurative and abstract forms, building a poetic atmosphere to challenge the viewers’ discomfort during the process of art appreciation.
