CHANG Chung-Fan lived in the United States, a place of intermixing cultures, for many years. In her work, she blends her own understanding of beauty, capturing the traditional aesthetic standards of east and west, and presenting them, blended together, on the canvas. Through the meditations of the creative process, Chang applies artificial colors to form a painting that fuses scenery with abstractness. In Pingxi’s Land, Chang uses unnatural hues and fluorescent pigments to paint an abstract human figure with the imagery of a Chinese landscape painting. The sense of conflict created by the image and its colors are a metaphor for the conflicted feeling of being an interloper that artist felt, both as a human being in a natural setting and as a worker in a foreign land. The expression of such unexpected feelings has become another kind of poetic visual aesthetic.
