HUANG Wei-Sheng uses photography to create historical documentary records of near-forgotten industries in Taiwan such as coal mining. Black Gold Miners 1992 (1) shows 2 industrial railway lines passing through the river valley. A large pile of wood lies on one side of the rails while 2 workers wearing bamboo rain hats and raincoats trudge in the rain as they push a cart laden with coal. Taiwan’s coal industry started to grow in the 1900s, but has largely disappeared by now, with only a few operational mines today.
