CHANG Hsiao-Chen’s photographic works were inspired by the horizontal scrolls of traditional ink paintings. Special finishing such as color offsets and tattering help create a strongly nostalgic atmosphere, allowing viewers to immerse themselves in the historical boulevards. Digital assemblage was utilized to recreate entire streets, generating an epic sense of visual expansiveness. Chongqing South Road shows a historical building on the left side of the picture. This is a 3-story building that integrated both Chinese and Western architectural features. The building was transformed into a coffee house under Starbucks. The revitalized building and other retail spaces offered for rent on the right side form a stark contrast on how time has changed the appearances of these historical landmarks. Instead of using digital photography that offers greater speed and higher volumes of visual information, CHANG Hsiao-Chen relied upon his mastery of traditional photography to generate aesthetic images that have been forgotten in time.
