CHEN Shao-Yen’s artworks of urban landscapes are connected to the experiences from an urban lifestyle. Midnight Rain depicts a heavy, midnight downpour. Black and white tones highlight the midnight atmosphere of urban nights. Chaotic speed lines were employed to recreate the scene of randomly falling raindrops. People tend to dislike rain, but the occasional shower provides a welcoming sense of coolness that washes away vexing thoughts. CHEN Shao-Yen employed the scene of urban rain to communicate the fickle and changing nature of urban space, city climate, and personal feelings.
