CHANG Yi-Tsu’s The Virtuous Family is inspired by the verdant forces shown by bamboos and illustrated as a means to achieve personal perfection and training. The picture shows massive, earthen yellow trunks with fresh-green branches and leaves, while bamboo shoots emerge from the ground. This depiction shows a large family composed of the older folk, the individual, and the young to illustrate the legacy of life. Strong strokes, hooks, and dabs were used to create dense thickets of bamboo leaves, while birds gliding and fluttering about the plants add liveliness to the entire artwork. Natural cycles and changes were depicted in this artwork to convey the goals of biology in attaining stability, harmony, and completeness.
