From childhood artist CHANG Yi-Tsu grew up in the countryside an often uses the village and forest as themes for her work. She has dug deeply into the study of traditional techniques over many years and recently has begun to devote herself to experimenting with new materials, trying to impart an innovative style to classical themes. In this work, Still Mountain, she has used Gold paper to substitute for traditional Xuan Paper. This special paper is made by adding a thin layer of silk to gold foil paper, which radiates a simple, quiet, and elegant beauty and is able to give expression to clear separation of color overtones at multiple levels. When we look carefully at this work the light emanating from the surface of the paper reminds us of the sunlight on an early autumn morning. The painting conveys a dignified yet warm atmosphere as it gives expression to the lively charm of the forest. CHANG Yi-Tsu believes that appreciating the beauty of the forest is like observing the illusive changes of human society. One must try to observe and give it expression from every angle. This work not only reveals an innovative style in Chinese ink painting, it also conveys to us the Zen ideas that the artist has learned from life.
