CHANG Chih-Chia’s artwork often carries a somber atmosphere, using flat, camera-like angles to capture moving landscapes. The skies make up a greater half of The Impression of Silence, while the divider and surface of the highway road make up the second half to divide the composition into two clear parts. The extending roads disappear into the horizon and merge into the vanishing point. Black and white tones and the balanced layout recreate the bland scenery seen through the windshield, yet this blandness is where the desired serenity lies. CHANG Chih-Chia used sceneries observed from the drivers’ perspectives to capture the sights of disappearing bushes and rapidly moving sights along the roads. This seemingly monotonous scenery communicates the fact that travelers seek not beautiful sceneries but a serenity where their heart truly belongs.
