The Support or Opposition of the Silent Majority by Eastern Gouache painter LI Meng-Fang mainly reflects animals and plants living in human environments and the acclimatization process that they have to go through. The puffer fish depicted in the painting has expanded its body and erected its defenses, while irises giving off its nocturnal fragrance show their back to the viewer in a vain effort to hide from our eyes. The artist has employed simple layouts and characterization elements to communicate the overt and covert oppositions exhibited by animals and plants against their artificial surroundings. LI Meng-Fang believes that these species, removed from their natural environment, are forced to cope with artificial settings and arrangements which differ dramatically compared to their native homes. When faced with reduced living spaces as well as excessive human greed and desire of natural resources, these species can only protest in silence. This protest has been depicted in this artwork with the hopes raising concerns for conservation efforts for our natural environments as well as plants and animal species.
