LIOU Jenn-Shing mainly creates ink paintings and has made a series of experimental artworks in various presentations. Mustard Seed Garden Continued adopted a different approach to interpret the essence of Qing-era woodblock prints. The Mustard Seed Garden is an anthology of classical templates designed for traditional art students. The contrasting colors of yellow and blue were employed so that the sceneries of the Mustard Seed Garden are recreated in geometric blocks on a wholly black canvas. The colored lines would mimic the shades and strength of ink painting art to form strong contrasts between the background and the graphics, adding modern aesthetics to the Mustard Seed Garden. LIOU Jenn-Shing demonstrates his masterly employment of traditional media to create modern cultural domains without being trapped by traditional restrictions, testing the possibilities of water color and traditional techniques in order to exhibit the spirit and essence of modernity.
