LIOU Jenn-Shing mainly creates ink paintings and has made a series of experimental artworks in various presentations. Between the Dotted Line – Peace and Joy is a work that celebrates the Christmas festival. Traditional ink painting styles and strokes were employed to create various Christmas decor, gingerbread houses, Christmas feast, and presents of various sizes and gaudy packaging, offering every viewer with a sense of joyful festivity. These items are combined to form a rapturous Christmas tree while the background is decorated with clouds found in Chinese temples to symbolize the integration of Chinese society with western traditions. The paper, dyed wholly in black, form a stark contrast against the colorful lines, generating an atmosphere of warmth and homeliness against the serene back drop. LIOU Jenn-Shing demonstrates his masterly employment of traditional media to create modern cultural domains without being trapped by traditional restrictions, testing the possibilities of water color and traditional techniques in order to exhibit the spirit and essence of modernity.
