In the Discovery Channel – Climbing, Hunting, Fishing series, CHEN Ching-Yao uses the angle of western documentaries which he felt often regard Taiwanese folk cultures as mere curiosities. The people depicted in the photograph have masqueraded as westerners who came to observe traditional Taiwanese culture to satisfy their inquisitive nature, exploring an obviously artificial landscape. CHEN Ching-Yao hopes to use these works to illustrate the unbalanced cultural exchange that permeates our colonial history. The outlandish depictions of this work also illustrate aspects of our modern society.
