YU Wen-Fu is skilled in using bird feathers as his creative media in order to express the conceptof “flight.” By arranging feathers and altering their forms, and by using different media and devices, YU Wen-Fu was able to interpret mundane elements that are often neglected in nature. In the work, Landscape Dialogue, the artist attempted to combine the two media of feathers and ink. Traditional ink painting techniques and aesthetic elements were employed in the structure and form. Feathers were dyed five different shades and used to form lines as well as replicating the texture of Shanshui paintings and stones. Inks of different shades accentuate the distance between mountains and rocks. From afar, the composition looks like an ordinary Shanshui ink painting. Up close, however, reveals intricate details and feathers stacked together to form thick and everchanging textures, reflecting powerful visual contrasts and a rich layering effect, demonstrating the artist’s unique style.
