HUANG Fa-Cheng’s Diving Here-2 is an oval composition where blue waters cover the greater half of the picture. Different tones of blue were employed to create clear and rippling effects on the water surface. A man wearing swimming shorts is shown leaping into the water from a yellow diving board. Several patches of gray colored undiscernible shapes float upon the water surface like islands, serving as a metaphor of the environment at large. The artist believe that competitive divers are scored according to the size of the splash generated in the swimming pool as well as the difficulty of the moves performed before the diver comes into contact with the water surface. The smaller the splash, the higher the score achieved. HUANG Fa-Cheng thus illustrated the diving process to convey his interpretation on the environmental impact of human intervention, where seemingly benign acts have resulted in excessive destruction of the environment.
