HUANG Chun-Chia is a skilled calligrapher, and believes that calligraphy is not just a series of words, but also includes symbols and graphic icons. The artist thus attempted to combine abstract texts with graphics to transform the connotations of Chinese characters, changing strokes and arrangements to generate a diverse display of graphics that depict the various aspects of calligraphy. In Remember, the artist has converted the characters of Namo Amitabha into phonetic symbols which are broken apart, re-assembled, and repeatedly overlapped to replicate Buddhist chantings and to commemorate the disaster. The artist hopes that the artwork would heal the wounds generated by the natural cataclysm, paying particular attention to the wetness, dryness, and intensity of the ink colors. Other artistic elements include blank areas that depict the relationship between objects and subjects as well as the arrangements of paper leaflets of different sizes to create layered visuals that portray the rhythmic movements of the texts and musical interaction between the different symbols.
