HSU Ming-Ren uses self-made charcoal pencils and scrap papers to give his works a true hand-crafted feel. Landscapes drawn from memories are broken down, re-assembled, and transformed into panels of mysterious spiritual prose. In Scenery. Condition 16, HSU Ming-Ren believes that his artwork refers to an emotional state achieved through the process of creation. Under this status, all information captured is concerned with the landscape. Sharp tools were employed to create multiple lines upon the thick canvas to form a sculpture-like effect. Pencils were then used to create overlapping smudges and forms to generate different layers and tones to give a weathered appearance. Through creation, HSU Ming-Ren has awakened his innermost spiritual requirements and sensory experiences in an attempt to portray his co-existence with himself living in a parallel universe.
