CHENG Li-Yun has spent many years living in the United States and has often adopted the four occidental elements of water, fire, earth, and air as the subject of her works. Having grown up in Taiwan, CHENG Li-Yun has a special sense of intimacy with water and nature. In Untitled N-9, CHENG Li-Yun used the oceans as her subject. She first created a base with light colored tones and then used darker shades to cover the entire surface. Undried paint was then scraped using a hard pen tip, leaving undulating scratch marks that resemble the ocean’s waves and recreating the serenity of sun shine bathing the surface of the sea. CHENG Li-Yun attempts to explore the entire universe using the elements of water, fire, earth, and air, allowing the viewers to personally experience the depth and enigmatic nature of our natural world.
