SHIH Ju-Hsuan is skilled in acrylic painting and layering, using large strokes to create unique portraits. Unlike most portraits that aim for realism, SHIH Ju-Hsuan’s works takes a unique angle and perspective to highlight the unique personality and self-consciousness. Brace Series is composed of three panels where different angles have been employed to create the front and side profiles of a man’s face. SHIH Ju-Hsuan believes that the neck serves as a connector that links the human spiritual form with its physical form. These two forms have their own path of development, yet affect each intimately, sharing similar features despite their exclusive independence. The artist employs this dichotomy to express the constant exchanges brought by time amongst similar but unfamiliar individuals. SHIH Ju-Hsuan’s works allow viewers to experience the sense of physical depletion and isolation that result as people struggle to pursue their desires in the material world.
