JHAN Jhuang-Syuan’s works have always been focused upon poverty, class, and residence justice. The residents of illegally built housing are often the subjects of his concern. In Crime I, JHAN Jhuang-Syuan has removed everything from the picture other than the illegally built housing to leave a clean, white exterior that contrasts against the texture of the construction. By focusing upon the less privileged, JHAN Jhuang-Syuan illustrates life on the brink to portray a complex sense of aesthetics. JHAN Jhuang-Syuan’s work is a sharp critique on modern society’s quickness to condemn those living along the brink. His detailed brushwork compels us to reflect upon our everyday lives and conveys his disapproval for the Taiwanese society’s hostility towards the poor.
