CHOU I-Hsun is skilled in the use of graffiti to express unique observations of everyday life. In Happiness and Successful, CHOU I-Hsun takes the famous children’s song “My family” as the main theme. The blue skinned person depicted in the painting wears thick cosmetics, a smug look on his face, and a red-colored cone on his head, while his neck is tightly bound by police tape. “HOPE” and “nice guys finish last” are written upon his left and right arms. CHOU I-Hsun wants to convey the idea that even the most grim-looking individuals may have a harrowing tale of their own. People depicted in the background are wearing expressions of shock and fear as if they are subject to immense pressure. But astute viewers would discover a rainbow and castle perched high up in the sky on top of the picture, communicating the fact that despite the conflicts and unhappy events experienced, everyone should remember that home is always their safe harbor, standing strong against the storm of reality as the guardians of our innermost innocence.
