LIN Yu-Chun is skilled in ink painting, adopting a style bursting with tension and theatrical elements. Most of the artist’s works are vertical Shanshui paintings that reinterpret classical Eastern and Western legends. Long Time Ago is composed of 4 such paintings that portray the ancient and mythical Eastern, Southern, Western, and Northern guardians, namely the Azure Dragon, the White Tiger, the Crimson Bird, and the Black Turtle described in Shanhaijing (Classic of Mountains and Seas). The composition is a showcase of LIN Yu-Chun’s mastery of ink painting and is filled with strange peaks, alien trees, and various forms of life, giving a theatrical presentation of Shanshui artworks while presenting the isolated and dream-like world described in Chinese folklore.
