WU Pei-Chi’s Flowers and Animals is an eastern gouache artwork employing different shades as the base to subtly depict a mysterious and serene atmosphere. The composition shows a massive rainforest composed of entwining branches and vines of different tones and intensities, arranged in such a way to create a rich, multi-layered composition that symbolizes the boundless energy of natural vitality. The artist has also cleverly concealed human hands and wolf claws within the jungle in gaps amongst the thickets as means of luring things within the jungle or as symbols of desire, generating an elegant and narrative artwork. WU Pei-Chi believes that loving relationships include both romantic gentleness and reckless barbarity, and that love can only be sustained by achieving a harmonic and sensual coexistence of these two forces. Natural imageries of an organic rainforest where both animals and plants co-exist and mutually depend upon one another have been employed by the artist to illustrate her beliefs about love.
