LAI Yu-Ling believes that creation is an act of discovery and that working on a canvas literally brings her on a journey into the unknown. LAI Yu-Ling uses painting to portray a youth and to re-discover the innocent memories of her childhood. In City Image, the black background and gray city walls are layered against each other. Brilliant blocks of color create regions with very different dynamics, generating a dialog between the static and active portions of the painting. Urban plants are reimagined as abstract squiggles, transforming them into musical notes of dreamlike melodies dancing along the canvas. LAI Yu-Ling utilized combinations of seemingly contradictory color blocks, strokes and lines to create a secret rabbit hole plunging deep into her childhood memories, bringing the viewers along to re-discover their heart of innocence.
