The works of JHONG Jiang-Ze often project the self into natural objects and reveal a Zen-like thinking in his painting. He reinterprets traditional Chinese painting using Western painting techniques, developing a symbolism of his own. In Flying Flowers, Dreamy Dew, he applies calligraphic brushstrokes onto a base of mixed yellows, reds and whites, creating floral and insect-like forms. The chaotic branching of the flowers and the blood-filled bodies of insects, through repeated smearing and overlaying, have gradually become indistinct; their forms are smashed all over the canvas. The brushstrokes of this piece are both exquisite and crude. Through dialogue with his inner self, the artist exhibits a lofty dialectical process to present the perceptive qualities of contemporary civilized thought.
