Artist CHEN Yi-Chieh has always been fascinated by cartoons. Over her career, she continues to contemplate the relationship between comics and images. In this work, she analyzes the color ratio of cartoon “Ultraman” using computer software, placing the colors of each character in dots in a 25 by 25 matrix. The characters are once again virtualized and symbolized, as if Ultraman is coded into many aligned color dots, forming an image we are not familiar with. These matrices, under Chen’s design, reflect the culture that has created these characters, but on the other hand, fully depart from the meaning of the characters.
