In CHIU Chih-We’s painting Girl, Mirror of the Heart, a pair of girls showing only their mysterious eyes are joined together, facing each other as if mirror images. They are lying down, wrapped in pink swaddling clothes, adorable, quiet, stylish and nonaggressive. The girls’ peculiar tentacle eye attachments reveal a stormy personality. This big-eyed girl represents an incarnation of the artist’s inner feminine self. Chiu holds that there’s a little girl in all of us; we are compound beings with both feminine and masculine aspects. This piece is a union of images from Chiu’s childhood years and a description of his fiancée. The shapes and ideas of this piece are drawn from the struggle between reality and Chiu’s ideal inner world, sending him on a quest for his truest, most ideal self.
