In CHIU Chih-We’s painting Girl, Shuriken, a girl with a veiled mouth holds in her hand a decorative, toy-like weapon. Under her adorable exterior is a hint of danger and lust for power, yet lacking aggression. This big-eyed girl represents an incarnation of the artist’s inner feminine self. Chiu holds that there’s a little girl in all of us; we are compound beings with both feminine and masculine aspects. This piece is a union of images from Chiu’s childhood years and a description of his fiancée. The shapes and ideas of this piece are drawn from the struggle between reality and Chiu’s ideal inner world, sending him on a quest for his truest, most ideal self.
