Artist LIAO Chi-Heng understands that painting does more than simply describe nature; it can present mental associations and convey inner feelings. In Winter’s Arrival, he composes the scene with cool tones such as whites, purples, blues and blacks, and creates perspective and a vanishing point with contrasting shades of color. The artist’s composition of oblong blocks of color endows the image with an intense dynamism. Looking closely, we see that he uses impasto and layering in lieu of detailed depiction of the urban street scene, thereby creating a wintry appearance.
