Artist LIAO Chi-Heng understands that painting does more than simply describe nature; it can present mental associations and convey inner feelings. In Urban Impressions, he builds an abstract, poetic urban landscape out of oblong blocks of color, mostly lithe whites and grays, but supplemented by deep brown tones. Through contrasting shades of color, the artist cleverly builds a sense of perspective. Looking closely, we see that he uses impasto and layering in lieu of detailed depiction of the urban street scene, thereby expressing the appearance of the city as seen from his inner mind.
