作品賞析
In the work of Hsu Chun-Wei we frequently see images of creatures with an animal head and human body. In Mimicry, the artist sketches her subjects with large ink splotches and fine lines to create nine human-headed zebras, each in a different pose. The picture’s windowpane composition and its blue seats in the background suggest a scene in which the figures are riding mass transportation. Doing what most people do while traveling in a rapid transit car, some figures have their hands folded against their chests, heads lowered in deep thought, others are lost in a book or just closing their eyes in repose. With this piece Hsu tries to convey the idea that each of us has his or her own uniqueness but that sometimes, because we are self-conscious about other people looking at us, we create a misleading outward appearance, like zebras using their stripes to hide themselves on the savannah to avoid danger and surrounding uncertainties.
