In Gloomy Wanderings, CHEN Ruei-Hong interprets the course of life from growth to death by painting uprooted, bug-eaten cabbages. In this painting, heads of cabbage removed from the soil in which they grew are stacked into a heap. Then they’re tossed upward, turning in the air. Based on things he’s seen in real life, Chen expresses the passage of time in the composition of this piece, showing the persistent effect of time on living beings. In this painting, he conveys the cycle of birth, growth, aging and death that living beings face in their futile struggle against time before they eventually pass on into oblivion.
