Artist LEE Yen-Hua collects used books, whose pages she uses as paper for her art. It’s a way to engage in a dialogue with the author though woodcuts and water-and-ink painting. In Above You, Lee displays three human silhouettes, held aloft by treelike objects, on the pages from a book. In the lower part of the picture stands a white figure holding up his arms as if wielding some mystical power. Next to him is an image that appears to be a human face looking at the viewer, but it also looks like a pair of figures in profile. The painting’s overall imaginative narrative, which complements the text of the pages, is lively and filled with intrigue. In using books as a medium, Lee expresses her creativity on the pages, engaging in dialogue with the text, and sharing with the viewer the process of this dialogue between visual images and textual language.
