Artist LEE Yen-Hua collects used books, whose pages she uses as paper for her art. It’s a way to engage in a dialogue with the author though woodcuts and water-and-ink painting. In The Flow of Consciousness, Lee displays two intertwining human figures on pages from a book. Careful observation reveals that the two figures, each shaded differently, have stylized fish as eyes, and one of the figures is adorned with abstract branching patterns. The images complement the text of the pages, and the painting’s overall imaginative narrative is lively and filled with intrigue. In using books as a medium, Lee expresses her creativity on the pages, engaging in dialogue with the text, and sharing with the viewer the process of this dialogue between visual images and textual language.
