Because of his job, photographer CHEN Chih-Ho for the last 12 years has been involved in documentary photography in Taichung’s Guangfu New Village. During his innumerable visits to “Military Dependents’ Villages” Chen has taken photos of every crook and cranny leaving a record in images of these villages that have gradually faded away, overwhelmed by march of time, in a series of works entitled Vanishing. A March Cloud over a Serene Shop is one of the pieces in this series. Here Chen has photographed the interior of a variety shop next to an open market. With post-production special effects he adds some color to the black & white photo. In addition, he inserts shadows of moving figures and dark clouds, thus adding to the scene traces of the passing time and events. Through his feelings and personal identification with Guangfu New Village, Chen combines his photography with multiple images in a surrealist manner to convey his own, individual, observation of the greater world around him to open up a conversation about the past.
