While growing up, LIN Ya-Han often got together with members of her family, combing and braiding each other’s hair. As such, she developed fond impressions of hair. In Heart Strings I, she depicts the myriad appearances of hair through masterfully executed water-and-ink technique. In the scene, two tufts of long hair hang down, the ends intertwined like a cruller. The changes in density of the ink work emphasize the hair’s long, elegant, strewn and undulating appearance. Upon careful observation, we see that each strand of hair is distinct, underscoring the refinement of the artist’s technique. The artist believes that the elegance and arrangement of the hair reflect a psychological state. By depicting hair in detail, Lin expresses the emotional atmosphere of both the individual and the external environment after agitation.
