Household appliances are subject matter of TSAI Yi-Hsun’s photographic piece Extracting Spirits: Household Appliances. This piece examines the relationship between people and objects. In this photograph, Tsai uses the idea of a blueprint as a means to present a rice cooker, water heater and propane tank. Succinct lines left over after the X-ray removal the surfaces and substances of these objects illustrate their structures and positional relationships, not only emphasize their internal and external structures, but also providing a fresh look at familiar objects and capturing interactive memories and traces of life between the self and the objects.
