Artwork Appreciation
CHEN Ping-Han’s creative focus is based on animals and the environment. “Jelly Zoo X” expands a two-dimensional painting into a composite material provided with three-dimensional installations of acrylic boxes that contain birds, fish and other animals allowed to fly or swim in their spaces. Their freedom, however, is only illusory as the animals are actually locked in a cage and can only move within their confinements. Brushstrokes are deliberately used to create the smooth, cold, and hard texture of marble. What seems to be like a beautiful background is actually a fragile, distant, and unfeeling world called “Jelly Zoo”. CHEN Ping-Han hopes to use creative works to reflect upon the poorly defined boundaries between nature and artificial environments.
