Artwork Appreciation
CHEN Yen-Chih’s creation focuses on creating a real yet virtual events and landscapes in order to express the isolation between individuals in the modern society. In Scar Land, a meteor crater has appeared upon a barren landscape, attracting a number of people to look at the crater for themselves. These tiny figures on the ground surface have gathered due to an abnormal incident, yet all of them are standing alone by themselves and not interacting with those around them. Cut-away sections have exposed the lower layers of the rocky landform, revealing the seemingly realistic terrain to be part of a completely artificial world, with the people living in this world to be completely oblivious to this fact. The crater or holes on the ground serve as a metaphor to the negative injuries and impact to our inner emotions, while the barrenness represents the artist’s sense of hopelessness and powerlessness towards our current society.
