Artwork Appreciation
HSIEH Yi-Shan studied Eastern gouache at Tunghai University, and she chose her familiar scenes as the themes of sketches. The work Structure is the artist’s unconscious glance in the daily life. She sees the half-built construction with pillars exposed. The construction is surrounded by wild grass and seems to be discarded without management. Through this work, HSIEH Yi-Shan turn the corroded surface of objects into an abstract work of poetic painting. She thinks the figures of everything will be lost and changed, but the ruins indicate a potential life which is waiting for regeneration in the darkness. Through following the spirits of Northern Song dynasty ink painters who imitated the natural environment, she presents her mental feelings toward the landscape she sees.
