Artist Tung Ming-Chin explores the nature of sculpture through his work, delving into the relationship between surface texture and form, and exploring the possibilities of wood. These two wood sculptures are composed of geometric wooden frames that extend upward, resembling buildings. One piece’s exposed wooden structure is stark, while the other looks as if it was tightly wrapped in cloth and about to emerge; it shows time and space frozen in a tense, fluid moment. The wooden frames are composed of twelve different woods, including camphor, cypress, and pine, sourced from both Taiwan and abroad. Joined with tenons and adhesives, they symbolize the diverse forms of a forest. Tung Ming-Chin believes the “forest” is a miniature society where the strong prey on the weak and natural selection prevails. His wooden frame structure simulates ecological symbiosis. The restraining, bandage-like wrapper also serves as a shelter, protecting an independent world from interference, which prompts viewers to contemplate the interplay of existence and symbiosis.
