For artist Chen Zhoa-Hua, the compressor is the most crucial component in modern household appliances, like the heart is for the human body. However, he has discovered that the compressors of discarded appliances are often still functioning. This feeling of being frequently discarded has led him to project his emotions onto the compressor. The work, Freezing Pine, is a modified dehumidifier compressor. Chen Zhoa-Hua removed the original evaporator, repositioned the fan and condenser, and welded metal plants to the rectangular tubing. The entwined metal plants metaphorically resemble the planter’s forced shaping of the plant, similar to the parent’s forced attempt to mold their child into their desired image. Chen Zhoa-Hua cleverly uses the frosted rectangular tubing to allude to the coldness he felt as a child, when his inner voice was ignored, suppressed by parents or the wider environment.
