Artist Lu Chih-Kai’s work often draws inspiration from everyday life or scenario. It focuses on the changing state of objects and materials, as well as people’s personal interpretations of them. In his work Snowfall, tiny white snowflakes slowly fall, gather, and then drift away in the wind against a black background. These seemingly light, snowflake-like white dots are actually made of chalk. In the dark basement of his home, Lu Chih-Kai used an electric drill to drill holes in chalk, allowing the chalk dust to slowly fall onto black cardboard. He then documented this process and the traces it left, creating images of a scene that people are virtually unable to discern was created from everyday objects and artificial means. For the artist, whether or not viewers interpret the white powder in the film as snow is irrelevant; this chalk-constructed illusion serves as an invitation to reconsider the relationship between what they see and reality.
