Artist Chen Chu-Li’s creative time drastically decreased after becoming a mother, which prompted her to consider how to convey her creative concepts more efficiently. This printmaking effort is unique in that it involves no woodblock carving. She affixed magnets to the backs of three wooden strips, then placed them on an iron plate to assemble and create the image. Finally, she used a printmaking machine to create 30 prints depicting a family of three sleeping in their natural positions. Three black line segments of varying lengths precisely delineate the positions of father, mother, and child on the bed. The longest line represents the father, always remaining straight and undisturbed; the shortest line, the daughter, constantly shifts angles and positions, forcing the mother to remain alert, always adjusting. Such minimalist abstract line segments most realistically reflect the life and situation of a family with children.
