Artist Li Jiun-Yang’s childhood coincided with the rise of Huang Chun-Hsiung’s puppetry, which ignited a puppetry craze with its television success. Various puppets became indispensable companions throughout his childhood. His creative talent was further nurtured by honing his skills by painting temple murals alongside his elders and painting movie billboards with his father. The various gods and beasts in folk beliefs have been transformed by the artist into the different roles of sheng, dan, jing, mo, and chou in a finger-puppet play. The unmixed pigments of red, green, blue, peach, purple, and yellow are rich and direct, creating strong contrasts like those of the colorful paintings on temple buildings. He particularly used the techniques he used to draw movie billboards in the past, with exaggerated expressions, deliberately emphasized contour lines, and bright colors, making the characters on each finger full of dramatic tension.
