Artist Chen Yu-Peng’s family originally lived on Guishan Island until it was designated a restricted area. The family then relocated to Renze New Village in Daxi, Yilan, now known as the Guishan Island community. This family migration history has become a key theme in Chen Yu-Peng’s work, focusing on the relationship between people and space, and the sense of boundaries within space. The painting uses a macroscopic perspective to transform the all-too-familiar landscape of his hometown into a theatrical stage. The deliberately elongated sections of high walls, fishing boats anchored in the harbor without setting out to sea, and the absence of people strongly evoke that “place where one cannot return.” The artist believes that modern life is constructed from both “virtual networks” and “reality.” In the foreground, gray geometric blocks form a virtual wall, modeled as if in a game, as well as a realistic townscape. These are interwoven to create a contemporary landscape of the 21st century, which mixes reality and illusion.
