Ceramic artist Chen Hsian-Jung uses his observational skills and ability with ceramics to transform everyday objects into abstract, geometric shapes, focusing on presenting color and texture. His work Rookworst (the Chinese title means “a sausage seen is not a sausage”) was created during his residency at the European Ceramics Center in the Netherlands. He took smoked sausages, a representative food of the Netherlands, as inspiration and observed how they were hung and displayed in shops. The beautiful arcs and curves of the sausage and the smooth and slightly reflective texture of the casing evoked rich sensory experiences. In his work, he enlarged the size of the sausage to highlight its shape and surface texture, and he also changed the color of the casing from brown to pinkish-orange to create a new, unfamiliar feeling. The artist uses pure modeling to free objects from their original symbolic meanings, thereby giving viewers the freedom to use their imagination and draw their own connections; he opens up different perspectives for interpreting familiar everyday objects.
